Apprenticeships and fashion

Paid work while you learn

A real apprenticeship pays you. You should not be asked for a course fee. If an advert says “trainee” and “job guarantee” and then asks you to pay, it is a course, not a job. Names that work this way include ITOL, IT Career Switch, and Newto. Skip those.

Find an apprenticeship

Open the official search. Set the location to Eastbourne and the distance to within 20 miles. Run it twice: once for business administrator, once for finance assistant. Create an account on the site and save each search so you get alerts when something new is added.

Standards worth knowing

These are the official apprenticeship standards, not live vacancies. The old Institute for Apprenticeships list now lives with Skills England.

Fashion route

There is not a stack of live fashion apprenticeships sitting there to apply for this week. Brands advertise on their own careers sites. A sensible order is:

  1. A retailer or business administrator apprenticeship (level 2 or 3) at a fashion brand, in a store or at head office.
  2. Buying and merchandising assistant, level 3.
  3. Then assistant buyer or merchandiser.

Head-office schemes are mostly in London, about an hour and a half on the train, and they often open in the new year. A store apprenticeship is still a way in, as long as the advert is not only tills. Read it. If the day is mostly the shop floor and customers, it is not the job you are looking for. Head office, stock, admin, or buying support is closer.

Save one of these and check it again in January.

East Sussex College

Look at college vacancies as well as courses. Admin roles come up. Read whether the job is a front desk before you apply.

East Sussex County Council

Council jobs are posted here. Some are back office. Skip ones that are mainly reception or the public counter.
